Your
First Day at Auburn… Walk up to the corner of Glenn Avenue and College Street.
Walk south along College Street towards Magnolia Avenue, past the shops and restaurants you will frequent during your time at Auburn.
Stop by Toomer's Drugstore on the northeast corner of College Street and Magnolia Avenue, order a small lemonade and look across Toomer's corner at the University. Think to yourself; the education I'll receive in these buildings will form my future.
Pause for brief moment of reflection, as you continue walking south along College Street, stop by J&M Bookstore and look at the AU stuff in there. Someday, you'll have some of that stuff for yourself and wear it with pride.
Continue down College Street until you reach Smith Hall. Take a moment to sit down on the steps and look at Samford Park. Try to visualize all of the students who have gone before you. They have helped to make Auburn what it is today.
Visit the University Chapel and give thanks to God for the opportunity you have. For every student at Auburn, there are many others who wish they could be there.
Cross College Street, continue west along Thatch Avenue and pay a visit to the Ralph Brown Draughon Library. Realize you'll spend countless hours in this building expanding your mind and developing your skills.
From the Library, look south towards Comer Hall and remember that Auburn's agricultural heritage is one of its greatest strengths. Others who do not understand Auburn often ridicule the University over lunch or dinner. You must never let these people distract you, for they are too small-minded to realize that the food they put in their mouths is the direct result of the work done at Auburn.
Continue walking west until you reach the lawn in front of Cater Hall. During the spring and summer, you'll probably pass some time between classes sitting here, enjoying a quite moment and thinking about who you are, where you've been and where you're going.
Keep walking west to the concourse next to Haley Center. Look to your right, and you will see Broun Hall and other engineering buildings. Realize that, at that moment, the people in those buildings are designing the tools and machinery that will make our lives better in the future.
Walking south you will see the complex of science buildings, and beyond them is Dudley Hall and Telfair Peet Theater. You may stop in sometime and see a play. You never know, the actor/actress may be on television or in the movies someday.
From Roosevelt Drive, turn right and walk west past Jordan-Hare Stadium and Plainsman Park. It's where you'll spend many fall Saturdays and see many exciting games. There's no doubt that athletics are a big part of the Auburn experience, but it's just one part of the complete Auburn experience that is so dear to the hearts and minds of all graduates. It is this total experience that makes us successful, dedicated and makes us a family.
Continue west, cross Donahue Drive and see Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum. When it's your turn, you'll graduate in this building. It is the last place you'll be a student at Auburn.
Many of us made that same trek on our first day at Auburn and on many days after that. Though Auburn is a large campus, it immediately felt like a small town. We knew that we would meet wonderful people here, and we knew those friendships would last a lifetime.
Would your first day at Auburn be complete without this walk? Not really. You see, as a student, you are the future of Auburn. And all those who have gone before trust you to take this walk, to understand its' significance, and see it through to the end. Rest assured that we will welcome you "to the other side" when you have completed it.
Congratulations on your decision to attend Auburn and welcome to our family.
